Cliff Cave Clean Up
Cliff Cave is a mile long, natural cave in south St. Louis County, which was gated in 2008 in order to protect bat habitat and to curtail future vandalism. Cliff Cave is owned by the St. Louis County Parks Department and access is limited to a permit basis. The walls of Cliff Cave are covered in spray paint and graffiti due to years of people sneaking in and leaving their un-welcomed mark. In April 2012, twelve students from Mehlville High School's AP Human Geography class began a clean up of Cliff Cave. Students used hand held wire brushes and water sprayers to remove graffiti. In September 2013, ten students from Mehlville's AP Human Geography class continued the clean up. The clean up has been directed by Dan Lamping, a social studies teacher at Mehlville and an avid cave explorer and cave surveyor with the Cave Research Foundation. Future trips are planned for this spring.
